As the leaves change and cooler weather rolls in, many of us are busy bringing our outdoor plants back inside. While this makes our homes cozy and green for the season, it’s important to remember that some of those beautiful houseplants can actually be dangerous for our dogs.

At Briarwood Farms, keeping our pups safe and healthy is always our top priority, and we want to share this important reminder with you: not all greenery is pet-friendly.

Here are the Top 10 Common Houseplants that are Toxic to Dogs
    1.    Sago Palm – Extremely toxic; even a small amount can cause liver failure.
    2.    Aloe Vera – Great for burns, but harmful if ingested by dogs.
    3.    Dieffenbachia (Dumb Cane) – Can cause severe oral irritation and swelling.
    4.    Philodendron – Popular and pretty, but irritating to mouth and stomach.
    5.    Oleander – Extremely poisonous; can affect the heart.
    6.    Pothos (Devil’s Ivy) – Causes vomiting and difficulty swallowing.
    7.    Caladium – Can lead to drooling, nausea, and throat swelling.
    8.    Peace Lily – Beautiful blooms, but toxic to dogs.
    9.    English Ivy – Can cause vomiting, abdominal pain, and drooling.
    10.    Azalea/Rhododendron – Even small ingestions can be very serious.

What to Do if Your Dog Eats a Toxic Plant:
If you suspect your pup has gotten into one of these plants, call your veterinarian or the Pet Poison Helpline right away. Quick action can make all the difference.

This fall, as you decorate your home and prepare for the season, keep both your plants and your pets in mind. A little extra precaution goes a long way toward making sure our furry friends stay safe, happy, and healthy.
